Heroin kills. Most often, the drug fractures community. Many of the 400 men at the Ark Drug Rehabilitation Centre were admitted with a heroin addiction. Their prospects would be bleak if it were not for the counsel and commitment of a devoted staff, some of whom have been through the intensive course themselves and are asked to extend their association with the centre as members of staff.
For some men the Ark is a temporary safe shelter, some are destitute, abused, terminally ill, HIV/AIDS sufferers and abandoned senior citizens. It is a remarkable sight to see men camping at the entrance gate in the hope of being granted a place on the programme.
The establishment is dependent upon donations and voluntary support as the government is not able to provide financial assistance. It is, nevertheless, the envy of similar rehab units with a correction rate that just can’t be matched elsewhere. It’s desire is to see these men return to society to play an active role in society.
The six month rehabilitation programme is built on sound biblical teaching, work therapy and life skills. it meets the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each man, restoring dignity, and providing hope and self-respect.
There were times when the management team couldn’t be certain of the provision of a meal later in the day. Goal50 stepped in to offer help and the Ark became the latest initiative in the charity’s feeding programme, providing the ingredients for one meal each week.
Goal50’s Mario van Niekerk has referred several men to the Ark over the last ten years. It’s a priceless resource. Regular donations are footballs and kit go down a storm with the men, many of whom are quick to share their soccer skills. This Ark is an inspirational institution that changes the lives of many men.
