There are many shocking true stories that rock the communities of the Cape Flats. Many thousands of children are neglected, abused and abandoned every year and their prospects of being rescued are limited. Though the problem looms large, Goal50 has a heart to help wherever possible.
When the safe house in the township of Heideveld opened in its door to its first resident in 2017, it signalled five years from first discussions with the government on how best to support the community. Goal50 acquired a single storey dwelling that needed a good deal of attention.
From the brief, a local architect Belinda Young produced three different concepts. Perhaps the most ambitious as well as practical design was to build a second storey (the only building like this in the area) to comfortably accommodate as many children on such a small parcel of land.
The first challenge appeared simple but took some months to overcome, the general telephone lines along the street were in the way of heightening the building.
Local companies were asked to pitch for the building works and after a matter of many months, completion date finally arrived. The quality of the final product met the expectations of the charity.
Perhaps the toughest assignment has been to find qualified house-parents to manage the house and offer the appropriate levels of care for its occupants.
Funding for the property purchase and the building activity was raised well in advance. The charity has also budgeted to provide the running costs of the project for the coming years too.
This truly is a safe place for vulnerable children.
