The bleakest of days. The best of outcomes.

All at Goal50 want to thank the team of ‘budding’ triathletes for a quite brilliant result to all their blood sweat and tears given in the name of charity. They raised £8,000 for a collection of Guernsey charities that are feverishly working to support poor communities during these days of Covid-19.

It was arguably the worst day of a quite beautiful Guernsey summer. Suffice to say, the team never dried out after the swim... it rained relentlessly.

The funds raised for Goal50 will be used for an emergency food programme in the townships of the Cape Flats of South Africa. Unemployment is at an all time high and 20% of the children are said to go to bed hungry.

So a big thank you to Lex Stephens, Suzy Mather, Tim Ogier, David Reed, Ellie Gallienne and Lauri Warlow... you will have helped many children to sleep soundly.

In light of the global coronavirus crisis, health experts have described the African continent as a tinderbox.

On Saturday 25 July, six hardy islanders are going where they’ve never been before to raise money for Goal50 and three other charities.

“None of the team claims to be a serious athlete. But we thought that we’d like to stretch ourselves and go beyond our pain threshhold to raise money for some charities that are being very active during the Covid-19 pandemic,” says ‘Tri Me 2020’ team member Lex Stephens.

The gang of six will swim 750 metres, cycle 20 kilometres and then run a further 5 kilometres. Lauri Warlow and fiancé David Reed do have a distinct advantage having put in a few more miles as they prepared for the Guernsey marathon. However, the event was postponed and rescheduled for October on the very day that the high-energy couple were due to marry. So they both bravely took on the marathon course on the original date and the organisers kindly recognised their endeavour by presenting them with medals.

So how will the sponsorhip be used by Goal50? The townships of the Cape Flats are quite a dangerous place to be. There’s a struggle with simple sanitation, never mind the hidden killer in Covid-19. Spectacularly high unemployment plagues the townships so income for food is a big problem. Goal50 is currently distributing emergency meals - mainly porridge and soup to bring relief to the hungry and the poor.
